How to protect of Biodiversity?

Protecting biodiversity today means committing to the conservation of natural habitats, being “friends of biodiversity” and acting responsibly for sustainability

In 2010 the World Biodiversity Association proposed to farmers a new protocol based on sustainability and attentiveness to the conservation of natural resources.

BF Protocol

Thus was born Biodiversity Friend®, the first standard in agriculture that measures a company’s performance in terms of environmental, social and economic sustainability

Biodiversity Friend® promotes and enhances sustainable agriculture and allows farms to undertake a process of gradual improvement of the environmental performance of the agro system, guaranteeing the consumer quality products obtained from highly natural territories.

The main objective of the Biodiversity Friend® standard is to harmonize production and conservation.

In order to satisfy the Biodiversity Friend® protocol there are analyses of: soil, water and air.

Soil

Soil fauna can be used to assess the disturbance levels of productive activities on agricultural land.

Earth worms, mites, isopods, millipedes, centipedes, springtails and other insects play a fundamental role in soil fertility.

Each group is assigned a score related to their sensitivity to environmental alterations to obtain the Soil Biodiversity Index.

Water

The quality of surface waters is assessed by analyzing the communities of aquatic macroinvertebrates.

The Aquatic Biodiversity Index (IBA-bf) detects the presence of bioindicators such as stoneflies, ephemerae, trichopteran, crustaceans, molluscs, etc. and also considers the hydro morphology, the tolerance of the groups to alterations and the main chemical-physical parameters of the water: temperature, pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen.

Air

Lichens are excellent indicators of air quality as they are extremely sensitive to all forms of air pollution, both in urban and rural environments.

The Lichen Biodiversity Index (IBL-bf)is calculated by analyzing the communities of lichens present on the bark of trees present on the farm or in neighboring areas.

We are proud and happy to have finished the first step with the receiving of the certification BF. However our path doesn’t end here, we will put all our efforts to reach all the goals of sustainability in all the managing and cellar aspects.
